Historic African American Sites in California
Allensworth Historic District
Small farming community founded in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allenssworth and
a group of others dedicated to improving the economic and social status of
African Americans. Listed o theNational Register of Historic Places in
1972 as historic site #72000263. Located at Stowe Avenue and Dunbar
Road in Earlmart, California.
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park
California state park established in 1973 to preserve the history
of the African American farming community of Allensworth.
Located at 4011 Grant Drive in Earlimart, California.
Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial California
Most of the more then 300 sailors who died during a
huge 1944 explosion on San Francisco's Port Chicago Pier
were of African American ancestry. Three ships were
also destroyed in this blast caused by 5000 tons
of munitions unexpectedly detonating.
Liberty Hall
Historic meeting hall in Oakland that was built in 1877 and
purchased in 1925 by Local 188 of the United Negro Improvement Association.
The building was later used by the International Peace Mission,
a movement led by African American preacher Father Devine.
Liberty Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places
in 1989 as site #89000199.
Also known as the Marcus Garvey Building. Located at 1483 Eight Street in Oakland.

Somerville Hotel / Dunbar Hotel
Los Angeles hotel built in 1928 that was known during its first year as the Somerville
Hotel, and later as the Dunbar Hotel. It hosted the first national convention
of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held
in the sestern United States shortly after opening. The hotel's nightclub
was a hub of the Central Avenue music scene in the 1930's and 1940's.
Designated a Los Angeles City Historic Cultural Landmark in 1974 and
designated a United States National National Historic Place in 1976.
In 2008 the building ceased operating as a hotel and became a 73 unit
apartment complex. Located at 4225 South Central Avenue.
Sugg-McDonald House
Sonora home built by African American William Sugg. in 1857.
listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
