The California redwood tree was designated the official state
tree of California in 1937. There are actually two species of
California redwood trees, the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and the Giant
Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). The coast redwoods
are the tallest trees in the world, reaching heights of up to
about 380 feet.
