1912:
Aviation history was made on May 12, 1912 when a young
Glenn L. Martin climbed onto a handmade box-Kite flying machine.
He took off from Newport Beach, flying 34 miles in 37 minutes
for the longest over-water flight in the world at the time
and performed what was the first sea landing in history
in Avalon Bay.
