Christopher Street Day
Commemorates an incident on June 28, 1969 known as the Stonewall Riots, so named
because it took place at the Stonewall Inn, a bar on New York City's
Christopher Street in Greenchwich Village. The incident was
an uprising of the local gay community against local law enforcement because
the community felt the police were violating their rights.
The first ever Christopher Street Day was marked
on June 28, 1970 by holding the first gay pride parade
in the United States on Christopher Street in New York City. That same
year (1970) several other U.S. cities held pride parades including
Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Christopher Street Day is also known
as Christopher Street Liberation Day and Christopher Street Liberation Memorial Day.
