Woodland Opera House

ADDRESS: West side of 2nd Street between Main and Dead Cat Alley.
DESCRIPTION:
When the original Woodland Opera House was built on this site in 1885
it was the first opera house in the Sacramento Valley.
The original building burned down in 1892 in a fire that destroyed
most of Downtown Woodland.
The current Woodland Opera House was built on the same site in 1895 and 1896.
The structure closed as an opera house in 1913, partly because
of the growing motion picture business and partly because of an injury lawsuit.
The building remained boarded up until 1971 when the Yolo County
Historical Society purchased the building to prevent it from beign
torn down. The society gave the property to the State of California
in 1980, a seven year, $2 million restoration began in 1981, and in 1989
the Opera ouse re-opened as a state historical park.
The Woodland Opera House is also listed on the National Register of Historic
Places as site #71000212.
