Putting the "S" Back in Smartsville
When the town was originally founded shortly after the California Gold Rush era it was known as Smartsville, but when a post office was built in 1909, but was renamed Smartville (without the "s" after Smart). For years the town was officially known as Smartville but local residents continued to call it Smartsville.
